Queen of Dreams has been aptly described as a "modem American immigrant saga" by Tara Sehgal in her review of the novel in the India Today, soon after its publication. It is the story of a first generation mother and her second generation daughter, who are both embroiled in their separate issues of identity.- In Search of an Earthly Paradise:The World View of Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni

Recipient of the National Sunshine Peace Award for her work Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni is a firm believer in the idea that writers can help to promote peace and joy in this world. This is testified by the fact that in most of her writings as well as interviews she talks about making peace with the difficult choices that life offers. She also believes in the inherent ability of human beings to restore values that can be built up collectively through a concerted effort. Divakaruni is sensitive to the idea that peace is one of the essential attributes for the establishment of an earthly paradise that will emerge through the combination of camaraderie and love. In a speech delivered at the Think Global Arts Foundation, she re-iterated the function of writers whose dreams of peace get reflected in their daily thoughts, words and actions which should be utilized to establish harmony in this trouble ridden environment.References

The main focus of Amy Tan's novels is women. She has written about the hardships and challenges women face in a man's world, a world in which even women become partners in crime with men in repressing members of their own sex. But while there are women who connive against women in order to keep them subservient, there are others who help them subvert this dominance. Therefore we find that female bonding is a very important subject in Tan's fiction, and can see it exemplified in all her novels. Although these women are aware of each other's weaknesses, are conscious of their differences from each other, have their disagreements and jealousies, yet there is a strong connection between them.References
